Labour Cares doula, Theresa Broer encourages you to discuss your goals for your birth, along with any worries or concerns.  She can provide you with information to supplement your prenatal classes.

Prior to your birth, your doula, Theresa will visit with you 2 to 3 times called prenatal visits. 

She may attend your doctor visits with you if you wish.
Theresa will discuss with you pain in labour, labour support techniques, comfort measures, and early labour at home during the prenatal visits.

During labour, she will join you when you feel the need for extra support.  As you labour, she will stay close by to answer questions, offer reassuring support and encouragement, as well as suggestions for ways to work through the contractions.  She will support and reassure your partner as well.  If medical decisions have to be made, she may help you gather the information you need to make informed decisions.  As your doula, Theresa will show other family members how they can best support your labouring needs and have them participate at the own level of comfort.

After the birth she will assist with early breastfeeding if this is the desired method you choose.
She will visit with you in the next few days to discuss and go over the birth.  At 4 to 6 weeks postpartum Theresa will have a detailed "Birth Story" for you and your family to read.

Some doulas offer to take photos of the birth.  These are absolutely wonderful for remembering the entire labour/birthing process that women sometimes forget.

And finally, you will have made a new family friend.
